On the podcast last week we played the very last episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, which most experts agree marks the end of old time radio. However as I alleged there was another broadcast that same day. The long running series Suspense also played their final episode. I received a number of emails this past week asking to play that episode as well. So, for today we will play that final episode of Suspense which aired on the fateful last day of old time radio on September 30, 1962.

Suspense was one of the premier drama programs of the Golden Age of Radio and was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills". The show had an incredible 20 year run starting in 1942 and ending in 1962. In the earliest years, the program was hosted by "The Man in Black" which was played by Joseph Kearns or Ted Osborne. Many of those early Suspense episodes were written or adapted by the prominent mystery author John Dickson Carr. One of the series' successes and its single most popular episode was Lucille Fletcher's "Sorry, Wrong Number. We have featured this story two times on Ron’s Amazing Stories:

Episode 3 – Airing on May 2, 2011
Episode 43 – Airing on October 30, 2012. This show was co-hosted by the great podcaster Jim Harold.

So, what about our story? It is a ghost story of sorts and is true to the formula of Suspense. It is entitled, “Devilstone” and first aired for the very last time on September 30, 1962.
