This week we talk about the origins of Western. I am sure I don’t have to tell you that Western fiction is a genre that tells stories from the late eighteenth through the nineteenth century. Well known writers of the subject include Zane Grey from the early 1900s and Louis L'Amour from the 1950s. The field peaked in the 60s and began to drop off in the late 1970s. Today, it is clearly still a popular genre, but the followership is still in decline. But where did the Western get its start? That is the subject of the podcast and I will present a short history of the genre.

What we have for our story is the first two episodes of the OTR series, “Frontier Fighters”. This was a syndicated series that ran sometime during the 1930s. Each show dealt with some bit of history about the early west. The episodes on today’s show cover René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, and the Lewis and Clark expedition.
